The UK Home Office has announced significant updates to the Student Visa and Graduate Route as part of the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules: HC 1333, published on 14 October 2025.
At Lexvisa, our expert immigration team understands how vital these changes are for international students planning to study, work, or settle in the UK. As a specialist London law firm, we help students and graduates navigate these evolving immigration rules confidently and successfully.
Increase to Student Visa Maintenance Requirements from 11 November 2025
From 11 November 2025, students applying under the UK Student Visa route will face an increase in the financial maintenance requirements. Applicants must now show higher levels of available funds to demonstrate that they can support themselves during their studies in the UK.
The updated financial thresholds are as follows:
- ยฃ1,529 per month for those studying in London (for up to a maximum of 9 months)
- ยฃ1,171 per month for those studying outside London (for up to a maximum of 9 months)
In addition, the maximum accommodation offset, the amount that can be deducted from required funds when accommodation is prepaid, will also increase to ยฃ1,529 for all Student Visa applicants applying on or after 11 November 2025.
These changes reflect the governmentโs adjustment to the cost of living and accommodation in the UK. International students must ensure they meet these new financial thresholds to avoid unnecessary delays or refusals in their visa applications.
At Lexvisa, our student visa solicitors in London can assess your eligibility, review your financial documents, and ensure your application complies with the updated rules to secure a swift and successful outcome.
Graduate Route Changes Coming in January 2027
The Graduate Route, introduced to allow international students to stay in the UK to work or look for work after completing their studies, will also undergo important modifications.
From 1 January 2027, the duration of the Graduate Visa will change for certain applicants:
- Graduates who have completed a UK bachelorโs degree or masterโs degree will receive 18 months of permission to remain in the UK, instead of the current two years.
- Graduates who have completed a PhD or other doctoral qualification will continue to receive three years of permission, with no change to current policy.
Applications submitted under the Graduate Route before 1 January 2027 will not be affected by these changes.
These adjustments were anticipated following the UK Immigration White Paper (May 2025), which outlined the governmentโs intention to review the Graduate Routeโs duration and purpose.
