Applying for a Global Talent Visa through the Arts Council

In February 2020, the Global Talent visa was introduced (replacing the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent route). The Global Talent visa is for Applicants who are a leader or potential leader in their field. This can be in fields such as academia or research, digital technology and arts and culture. All Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must first secure an endorsement from an endorsing body in order to make a Global Talent visa application. In the case of Applicants applying under the Arts sector, they will need to obtain an endorsement from the Arts Council England. ‘Arts’ sectors can include Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts (including museums and galleries), Literature and Combined Arts.

Who is the Arts Council as a Global Talent Endorsing Body?

There are many different degrees and disciplines of the arts and the Arts Council England accepts applications on behalf of the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT), the British Fashion Council (BFC) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). These organisations would determine whether the Applicant is a leader or emerging leader within that field through a specialist assessment.  Following this assessment, successful Applicants will be issued with an endorsement letter if they are considered to be a leader or emerging leader in the arts.

What is the Global Talent Visa?

As part of the UK Government’s overhaul of the Immigration System, the new points based system introduced the Global Talent visa to replace the former Tier 1 Exceptional Talent route in February 2020. The new route expands on the former and is open to promising migrant workers in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, humanities, digital technology, and the arts. The Home Office can choose the leaders in those fields or have predictions determined by evidence as well as having backing from an approved endorsement body.

Can I settle in the UK on a Global Talent Visa?

For Applicants who have been successful in obtaining an endorsement and have been granted a Global Talent visa, they are allowed to work and live in the UK for up to 5 years with there being no limit to the length in which they can stay in the UK. However, Applicants will be required to renew their Global Talent visa before it expires should they wish to continue to live in the UK.

One way an Applicant can extend their stay is through extensions with periods between 1 to 5 years. It is possible to apply for indefinite leave to remain (settlement) after 3 or 5 years, depending on the endorsement path.

Can EU nationals apply for the Global Talent Visa?

From 1 of January 2021, the Global Talent route was opened up to EU, EEA and Swiss nationals who do not have a right to be in the UK under the Brexit withdrawal agreement (the EU Settlement Scheme). As with all other migrants, EU, EEA and Swiss nationals will have to make an application in accordance with the Immigration Rules and obtain the requirement number of points for the Global Talent visa.
