Changes to the shortage occupation list

Liz Truss is aiming to challenge some of her anti-immigration cabinet colleagues by implementing a few changes to the “shortage occupation list”. This move would certainly allow some industries to employ more staff for instance, broadband engineers from overseas.

The UK finance minister Kwasi Kwerteng stated:

“It is not about relaxing rules. The whole point about the Brexit debate if we want to go down there was we need to control immigration in a way that works for the UK.”

Additionally, a Downing Street official stated: “We need to put measures in place so that we have the right skills that the economy, including the rural economy, needs to stimulate growth”.
