Submitting a Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa

The Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa is a good alternative to the Tier 2 work visa for those who wish to come to the UK for a short period to work (up to 2 years). However, in order to apply for this visa, you must be an overseas British citizen or a citizen of a country listed under appendix G of the Immigration Rules. You cannot apply for this visa more than once or if you have previously been granted a visa under the former ‘working holiday-maker’.

What is a Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa?

The Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa was designed for young people from participating countries (appendix G) or British overseas territories who wish to experience life in the UK. This visa allows you to enter the UK with a visa for up to 2 years to work and experience life.

What are the requirements for a Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa?

It is a points-based system application and you must score 50 points. Points will be awarded across three categories (nationality, age, and maintenance). The application must be submitted in accordance with Paragraph 245ZK of the Immigration Rules.

  • You will be awarded 30 points if you can show that you are from a participating country (Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea & Taiwan or if you are a British overseas citizenBritish overseas territories citizen or British national (overseas).
  • You will be awarded 10 points if you can show that you are 18 or over and under 31 on the date you submit your application;
  • You will be awarded 10 points if you can show that you have at least £1,890 in personal cash savings for maintenance and accommodation costs in the UK.

Your application will be refused if you have entered the UK on this visa before or if you have children under the age of 18. Your application may also be refused if you fall foul of the general grounds of refusal.

How much does a Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa cost?

Unlike other UK work visas such as the Tier 2 or Representative of an Overseas Business visa, the Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa costs significantly less. The visa costs £244 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge payment of £600. However, this IHS fee will be increased in October 2020, but will still be less than for most other UK visa categories. You should receive a decision within 3 weeks from the date you submit your application and biometric information at a visa application centre.

Can I apply for a Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa extension?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to apply for an extension under the Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa route. If your entry clearance application is successful you will be granted a visa for up to 2 years. However, you can consider alternative applications to remain in the UK on a long-term basis.

Can I work on Tier 5 Youth Mobility visa?

Under this route, Applicants can undertake salaried employment or self-employment. Self-employment is permitted under this route as long as you do not own any business premises where you wish to operate from. However, you can rent a business space to operate from. If you are self-employed you cannot have any employees and your business equipment must not cost more than £5,000.  Applicants cannot work as a professional sportsperson or a doctor or dentist.
