Michael Gove proposes free UK citizenship applications for EU nationals

On 24 May 2019, in an emotional speech, Prime Minister Theresa May declared that she will be stepping down as the Conservative leader and Prime Minister on 7 June 2019. One of the leading candidates to potentially replace Mrs May is Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs. Mr Gove has openly supported Brexit and he was an instrumental leader in the leave campaign during the 2016 Brexit referendum. However, Mr Gove has said that if he were elected he would do what is required to secure a deal with the EU and he would not consider a no-deal option or second referendum. In an attempt to build popularity amongst the general public Mr Gove has suggested that he will allow EU nationals living in the UK at the time of the referendum to apply free of charge for UK Citizenship. The current fee for UK Citizenship applications is £1330.

The British Nationality Act 1981 does not define what good character means. To meet the good character requirement Applicants must show that they have shown respect for the rights and freedoms of the UK, observed its laws and fulfilled your duties and obligations as a resident of the UK. The Home Office will carry out civil and criminal record checks when reviewing an application. Therefore, it is essential that all information is disclosed to the Home Office when applying for British Citizenship. It is advised that applicants also disclose minor parking offences such as fixed penalty notices and speeding offences under the Road Traffic Act 1984. A failure to disclose all relevant information is likely to result in your British Citizenship being refused and in some circumstances issues of deception may arise and a ban from applying again. If you have a criminal record or have had some issues with the law in the past it does not mean that you cannot submit a successful British Citizenship application.
