The Global Talent visa was introduced earlier this year to replace and expand on the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa. The Global Talent visa is for those Applicants who can show that they are leaders (exceptional talent) or are emerging leaders (exceptional promise) in their field. Applicants must obtain an endorsement from a Home Office approved endorsing body before submitting the UK Visas and Immigration application. There is also an option to be endorsed under the UK Research and Innovation category.
What is the Global Talent visa?
The Global Talent visa is for the exceptionally talented and promising in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, humanities, digital technology and arts and culture (including film and television, fashion design and architecture) wishing to work in the UK. Applicants who wish to apply for this visa must show that they will be leaders in their chosen field, or have the potential to be a leader. In order to show their potential Applicants must obtain an endorsement by a Home Office approved endorsing body.
How to apply for a Global Talent visa?
The Global Talent visa application process is similar to its predecessor (Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa) as it consists of two stages. The first stage is to apply for an endorsement to a Home Office approved endorsing body. The endorsing body will assess an Applicants’ skills, abilities, and achievements. Obtaining an endorsement is a difficult process and Applicants often fail at stage one. Our specialist immigration team can assist in the stage one process and ensure you submit a strong endorsement application. We have ample experience and we can advise on what type of supporting documents are required for the endorsement application. The second stage is to apply for the visa so that the Home Office can consider the Immigration aspects of the application such as your immigration history and eligibility for the visa.
It is possible to submit stage one and two applications together at the same time but if your endorsement application is refused your visa application will be automatically refused and this refusal will be put on your immigration record. Further, you will not be issued a refund for the Home Office application fee. Applicants should not apply for the priority visa service if applying for both stages simultaneously as the Home Office will not pause any applications and wait for an endorsement.
What are the different Global Talent endorsing bodies?
There are a number of different endorsing bodies and Applicants are required to submit an application to the endorsing body, which is related to their qualifying field. The endorsing bodies are:
- The Royal Society, for science and medicine
- The Royal Academy of Engineering, for engineering
- The British Academy, for humanities
- Tech Nation, for digital technology
- Arts Council England, for arts and culture
- UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), for research applicants
If your qualifying field is fashion, architecture or film and television, Arts Council England will pass on your application for review to:
- British Fashion Council, for fashion
- Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), for architecture
- Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT), for film and television
If you require advice on stage one or two, please contact our specialist Immigration Team.
How long does it take to get endorsed under the Global Talent visa category?
Applicants usually receive a decision within 8 weeks from the submission of the endorsement application. Applicants are likely to receive an expedited decision if they applied under the Digital Technology field and they have been accepted onto a UK recognised UK accelerator programme. Applicants may also get a faster decision if they:
- Hold an approved peer-reviewed fellowship;
- Work as a senior academic/researcher (subject to meeting the requirements); or
- Will be hosted or employed in an approved UK organisation and will provide critical contributions to the work supported by a research grant/award from an approved endorsed funder.
If your Global Talent endorsement application is successful you will receive an email from the Home Office with a copy of the endorsement letter. If you applied for stages one and two together the endorsement will be automatically linked with your visa application.
Differences between the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa and Global Talent visa
There is no cap on the number of Global Talent visas available. Under the former Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa there were only around 2,000 visas available. The Global Talent visa has also introduced a larger pool of endorsing bodies (including UK Research and innovation) inviting applications from a variety of backgrounds.
I have a Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa shall I switch into the Global Talent visa?
It is recommended that Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa holders switch into the Global Talent visa. Applicants who are endorsed under the Tier 1 Exceptional talent visa can apply to switch into the Global Talent visa category without having to apply for a new endorsement under Appendix W of the Immigration Rules. By switching into the Global Talent visa Applicants can enjoy the benefits that are ascribed to the visa such as work for an employer, as a director of a limited company, or be self-employed and change jobs without having to inform the Home Office. Applicants can also do voluntary work and apply for their family members to join them in the UK.
Can I apply for the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa?
As of 20 February 2020, the Global Talent visa replaced the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa and all future applications should be submitted under the Global Talent visa under Appendix W to the Immigration Rules. Both applications are similar in nature and share key requirements.
