eVisas 2026

The Home Office has announced significant changes to the UK immigration system that will affect anyone applying for a UK visa from late 2025 onwards. Physical visa stickers are being phased out and replaced with digital immigration status, known as an eVisa.

If you are planning to apply for a UK visit visa, work visa, student visa, family visa, or settlement, it is essential to understand how these changes may impact you.

At our leading London immigration law firm, we are already advising clients across the UK and internationally on preparing for the transition to a fully digital immigration system.

What Are eVisas?

An eVisa is a digital record of a person’s immigration status in the UK. It can be accessed through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account, created during the application process via the ID Check App or the EU Exit App for those under Appendix EU. This digital status allows individuals to view and share their immigration information as needed.

eVisas to Replace Visa Stickers in 2026

From 25 February 2026, individuals making a successful application for a visit visa and certain other visa types may no longer receive a visa sticker (vignette) in their passport.

Instead:

  • You will need to access your eVisa through your UKVI account
  • Your immigration permission will be held digitally
  • You must check your status online before travelling to the UK
  • UKVI will inform you whether you will receive a visa sticker or digital-only status

Later in 2026, UKVI will completely stop issuing visa stickers. All successful applicants will receive an eVisa only.

This marks a major shift towards a fully digital UK immigration system.

How do I access my eVisa in the UK?

To obtain an eVisa, follow these five main steps:

  1. Create a UKVI Account: Provide personal details and a current or expired BRP number on the online portal. If a BRP is not available, use the immigration application number.
  2. Link eVisa to the Account: After creating the account, an option to link the eVisa should appear, though this can take time.
  3. Complete Identity Check: Use the UK Immigration ID Check app with a Near Field Communication device to upload a digital photo and scan of the BRP.
  4. View eVisa: Once the identity check is complete, verify the accuracy of the eVisa details.
  5. Add Travel Document: Link a passport or ID card to the eVisa to maintain accessible immigration status after BRP expiration.

Transitional Arrangements (January 2026)

From 12 January 2026, most people granted a visit visa and some other visa types will receive:

  • An eVisa
  • And, in some cases, a visa sticker

Most people who were issued a valid visa sticker before 12 January will also be able to access their eVisa through their UKVI account.

However, not everyone currently needs an eVisa. The rules remain complex, and professional guidance is strongly recommended.
